It was an amazing stroke of luck when we came upon this tiny vineyard. Tucked away on a dead end street, we could not believe our eyes during our first visit. This two and a half acre vineyard was perfect in every way. Planted to four different Dijon Clones (114,115,667 and 777) with 4’x 4’ spacing, it could only be hand farmed using organic techniques.
Most vineyards in this neighborhood are planted on South facing slopes, this one was facing due East. While against the industry norm, it was a smart move as these vines are protected from the afternoon sun. This has proven to be crucial protection against the heat waves we sometimes see during harvest.
The Franciscan soils in the vineyard are made up of a mélange of rock and sand that provides very little water holding capacity. Paired with the tight planting, the competition in the vineyard is high and yields small quantities of intense fruit. When we found out that Arturo Robledo was the vineyard manager there was no question that this vineyard was something special. We knew immediately that some amazing and unique wines would originate from this small plot of land.
